Dartmouth subpoenaed in loan investigation

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) _ New Hampshire's Dartmouth College has been subpoenaed as part of New York state's investigation of the student loan industry.

The subpoena, dated February 14 and recently made public, was brought by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

The subpoena addresses the college's arrangement with Bank of America that allows the bank to offer "affinity" credit cards to Dartmouth students and alumni. These cards allow individuals to give back to their alma mater or to another charitable cause as they spend.

Dartmouth is among over 80 colleges and universities that offer affinity cards to their students in conjunction with Bank of America, according to the bank's web site.

Cuomo has alleged that these card programs may represent a conflict of interest if they encourage colleges to promote the banks' lending programs.

Lenders launch 50 repossession notices a week

SPECIAL REPORT: BANKS say they are not at fault for more than 50 homeowners a week being hit with repossession notices, some after missing a few repayments.

Association chief David Bell said non-bank lenders were "irresponsible" and their lending practices had been behind the increase, and major banks comprised only a small proportion of delinquencies, he told 3AW radio today. "The major difference between banks and other lenders is that banks are very careful about lending money. "We want to make sure that our customers pay that money back. More than 50 Victorians every week are being hit by repossession notices, with action taken on 707 properties in the past three months, the Herald Sun revealed today. Banks have launched action to take 707 properties, worth more than $200 million, in the past three months.

Downtown gets boost from Facebook influx

Those kids strolling the streets of downtown Palo Alto in matching track jackets aren't on the same sports team. They're the young army of Web firm Facebook, hundreds of employees that local workers and business owners say have become a dominant presence, boosting sales and rental prices.

Facebook's purchase of several offices in a small patch of downtown has caused commercial rents to increase 20 to 25 percent in the last year, according to realtor Sam Arsan, whose Menlo Park-based Arsan Realty rents downtown properties.

Located in Palo Alto since 2004, the technology firm now has four offices within a stone's throw of each other, at 156 and 151 University Ave. and 164 and 285 Hamilton Ave.

The company's growth is fueled by massive numbers of users who sign up for its free, Web-based social network, despite ongoing privacy concerns.

Facts Derail Bush’s Iran Plan

He knew that Iran had no nuclear weaponry, yet less than 2 months ago, with all the maturity and seriousness of a 2-year-old, claimed World War 3 was right around the corner because of Iran's non-existent "nucular" armaments. And when exposed as having lied about that, claimed that not only shouldn't he have toned down the lies about Iran, "on the contrary" he said, the NIE report justifies his saber-rattling and immaturity!

Bush has neither the intellect nor mental capacity to run a fast-food restaurant, and yet thanks to the rightwing and the Supreme Court, he has occupied the White House for almost 8 years of endless incompetence, malfeasance, massive corruption, and mass-murder (over one million inncocent Iraqis dead, and thousands of dead Americans).

Does anyone doubt the same clowns that are defending this latest scandal would also find some reason to defend him if he attacked Iran without provocation or cause despite this latest information?

The rightwing has proven to have no loyalty to this country!

Arnold's Advice for McCain

Can a cheap headline featuring hot-button words "Kos" and "Coulter" goose a blogger's hit count? The stats are in and the answer is ... unfortunately ... yes. ... P.S.: But the hed does refer to an actual item, which is here. 11:55 A.M.

Kos mocks Sen. Lieberman for naming his ad hoc independent party "Connecticut for Lieberman:"

It's still about him. It's always about him.

Hmm. What's the name of Kos's site again? Daily Netroots? Daily People Power? ... [Stolen from reader C.] 5:39 P.M.

The Atlantic's editors have hit on a way to make you hate them: Blogging to let you know what a challenging, "thought-provoking" time they're having at the Aspen Ideas Festival listening to E.O. Wilson, Alan Greenspan, Bill Clinton and Karl Rove, among others:

At 6.30am we glided out of Aspen in a fleet of silent shining limos (furnished by Lexus, one of the meeting's sponsors: I could get used to it).

Election Madness

His letters to me have always been angry, railing against our capitalist system for its failure to assure "life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness" for working people.

Just today, a letter came. To my relief it was not handwritten because he is now using e-mail: "Well, I'm writing to you today because there is a wretched situation in this country that I cannot abide and must say something about. I am so enraged about this mortgage crisis. That the majority of Americans must live their lives in perpetual debt, and so many are sinking beneath the load, has me so steamed. Damn, that makes me so mad, I can't tell you. . . . I did a security guard job today that involved watching over a house that had been foreclosed on and was up for auction. They held an open house, and I was there to watch over the place during this event.

Ottawa doles out $60-billion in tax relief

Dion will continue to have NO choice, then a spring or fall CPC engineered election 2008 election with the CPC running on their record-and Dion running on what? Social justice? Kyoto?

For the best of the LPC, Dion should vote this down, force an election, let the cards fall where they may, and allow the LPC to find a new leader and FINALLY and RIGHTFULLY renew itself at last.

Harper meddling in U.S. primaries, Democrats say

Harper's is perhaps, just being neighbourly and helping out fellow conservative white boy, McCain. Or thinks he is.

But probably isn't.

Many Americans are going to be royally peeved if Harper is interfering.

As are many Canadians. Posted 02/03/08 at 10:42 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

US and Europe get chummy over high-tech passport

Another possible biometric feature that may be making its way towards an airport near you may be iris recognition, the German minister added, although it's thought that most EU countries are less than enthusiastic about the plan due to the expense it would entail. The US is already planning to introduce new technology into its border checks, including updated scanning and fingerprint checks with invisible ink from next year.

As for a timescale on the project, both Ridge and Schily remained tight lipped and didn't give details, apart from saying that they wanted to see the project get underway quickly.

From October 2004, individuals visiting the US from a list of designated countries will need to have biometric passport to enter the country or else have previously applied for a visa a requirement most have escaped so far.
