SCIENTISTS CREATE THREE PARENT EMBRYO

The breakthrough came from a team of scientists at Newcastle University who experimented on 10 embryos unsuitable for IVF treatment.

They successfully replaced faulty mitochondria - which supplies cellular energy and controls cell growth - from the mother with undamaged cells from a female donor.

The embryos were then allowed to develop for five days before one of them was closely analysed and the transplant was deemed to be a success.

Scientists insist the baby would not inherit the donor female's characteristics, as the transplanted mitochondria would not have any effect on the child's personality or appearance.

Yacolt clerk in court on suspicion of stealing from Little League

A Yacolt woman made her first court appearance Tuesday on suspicion of stealing $68,000 from the North Clark Little League.

Brenda J. Finnegan, 46, allegedly took the money over three years while working as league treasurer, according to court documents.

During the brief appearance, Superior Court Judge John Nichols told Finnegan, who remains on paid leave from her job as Yacolt town clerk, that she makes too much money to qualify for a court-appointed attorney and that she needs to hire a lawyer or plan to represent herself.

Nichols set arraignment for Feb. 26. At that hearing, she will be charged with seven counts of first-degree theft.

Yacolt Mayor Joe Warren told The Columbian earlier this month that he has asked the state auditor to move up the town’s regularly scheduled audit to ensure no money is missing.

Falkirk rally to upend Hearts

TWO goals in three minutes consigned Hearts to a seventh consecutive game without victory as Falkirk came from behind to record three points on Saturday. The inluential Russell Latapy entered the fray to inspire the overhauling of a 1-0 deficit following Ruben Palazuelos' first-half header for Hearts. It was the Spaniard's first goal since arriving in Scotland. The Tynecastle side had dominated the first 45 minutes, however a revitalised Falkirk emerged after the interval and scored twice in a three-minute span late in the game through Carl Finnigan and Michael Higdon. The result leaves the Tynecastle side ninth in the SPL and toiling to cope with the relegation battle that is now upon them. .

Kids like booze and sex. So what?

But David Cameron this week made a brave attempt to reverse our fear: if we tell other people's children off for small misdemeanours, he reasons, others will not feel free to commit bigger crimes. Once in government, I wonder how quickly Mr Cameron will be knee-jerked into the usual prohibitions and controls. But right now his notion that we must "resocialise" the streets, that a child playing should be encouraged not arrested, that councils should resist "no ball games" bans, are truly refreshing ideas.

It was dark and pelting when I took the short cut back from Sainsbury behind the flats and how menacing all the teenagers looked. Then it struck me that the threat was more in my head than reality: sometimes a hoody is just keeping his hair dry against the rain.
