How Teach First is transforming a London school

Two of her tutor group wander over to chat. "She’s my favourite teacher," confides Amy, 12.

Davies tells the pair an anecdote about how one pupil had inquired whether she had a boyfriend. When she said yes, he asked, "‘Does he beat you up, Miss? It looks like it – you have big bags under your eyes’." She laughs – it must be all that late-night marking.

The cost of loyalty can be high when redeeming ‘free' miles

Fast forward and the Green Stamps of today are frequent-flier programs or hotel reward points or some loyalty program promising you free airline tickets, hotel stays or car rentals in exchange for your repeat business. But I often wonder if our loyalty is really worth the aggravation it takes to redeem those miles and points. I once spent a considerable amount of time trying to redeem miles for two tickets to Hawaii for my 10th wedding anniversary. I'm about to celebrate my 16th wedding anniversary and the ticketing ordeal is still fresh in my mind. I found a decent flight outbound but couldn't find any seats for customers like me — folks redeeming miles — for the return. There were too many blackout dates (restricted travel dates). Finally, I was told that to get a flight home, I would have to relinquish extra miles.

On the blog now:

In the first flush of her California victory, it seemed Clinton had a clear path to the nomination. But the picture looks different on closer examination a day later.

While she was winning the dwellings of America's elite, Obama was sweeping everyplace else - Utah, Idaho, Minnesota, Illinois, North Dakota, Kansas and Colorado, many of them states with virtually no black population. And his success in Missouri, Alabama and Georgia show that he continues to dominate Southern states with their large minority populations.

Why is Clinton doing so poorly in the heartland? There, away from the liberal media and establishment bias and from the coastal immigrant and Latino concentrations, she seems at a loss. Aside from her core white-women constituency, these voters are really supporting the memory of Bill's presidency more than the prospect of a Hillary administration.

BBC Predicts Nokia Horseshoe Tool for N99

The BBC's new Technology Blog has made some rather tounge in cheek predictions for 2008 . On the smartphone front, and I quote: Nokia brings out its latest smartphone, the N99. As well as featuring music, live television, a manicure set and a device for getting stones out of horse’s shoes, it offers an ice-cream cornet with a chocolate flake. "And, unlike, the new 3g iPhone," a spokesman explains, "it is 4g, making the mobile internet work properly for the first time."

Tough competition for video-gaming jobs

In reality, love of games is a prerequisite for most jobs in the industry, which is concentrated in the Bay Area and a few other tech-heavy regions. But as with so many things in life, it turns out that love is not enough.

You also need to show you can work on a team and that you can transform an idea into an actual game, according to hiring managers and those who already have landed in the industry. While graduates in other fields can hit job interviews with a degree and maybe an internship under their belts, wannabe gamemakers burn the midnight oil creating sample games or demo reels, short films that show off art or animation skills.

Game companies' appetite for new talent appears robust - the job fair at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco covered nearly an entire floor of Moscone West, with companies listing openings for programmers, animators, a variety of artists, sound engineers, game designers and game testers.

Sharif plans to contest Pakistan by-elections

Several hurdles stand in his way. But if he can overcome them, Sharif may plant himself in the running for the prime minister's slot in the new government.

Pakistan will hold by-elections in the coming weeks for seats left vacant either because a candidate died or because a politician won in more than one constituency.

Both Sharif and his brother, Shahbaz, will run, said Ahsan Iqbal, spokesman for the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N). The party captured the second most number of votes in the Feb. 18 parliamentary elections.

PML-N is currently in talks with slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) to form a coalition government. PPP, which won the majority of parliamentary seats, has yet to name a candidate for the prime minister post.

Regions' Channing Way branch open for use Monday

Customers of Regions Bank's Channing Way branch will be able to bank at the location Monday even though the branch was heavily damaged in Tuesday's storm.

Thanks to a PBF (portable banking facility) that has been placed in front of the boarded-up building, the Regions branch will begin serving its customers once again Monday morning.

Sunni Forces Losing Patience With U.S.

Since Feb. 8, thousands of fighters in restive Diyala province have left their posts in order to pressure the government and its American backers to replace the province's Shiite police chief. On Wednesday, their leaders warned that they would disband completely if their demands were not met. In Babil province, south of Baghdad, fighters have refused to man their checkpoints after U.S. soldiers killed several comrades in mid-February in circumstances that remain in dispute.

Some force leaders and ground commanders also reject a U.S.-initiated plan that they say offers too few Sunni fighters the opportunity to join Iraq's army and police, and warn that low salaries and late payments are pushing experienced members to quit.
