HSBC's annual IT spend to hit $5bn

HSBC's annual IT budget is expected to rise to almost $5bn next year as the world's third largest bank targets "global innovation" in its core systems.

In a presentation to analysts this week HSBC group CIO Ken Harvey said the extra spend will be offset by a 10 per cent cut in processing costs.

Harvey said the bank is now reaping the benefits of three years of sustained investment in technology which has resulted in one global, self-managed network, a reduction in data centres - from more than 120 in 1996 to less than 20 this year - and almost half (42 per cent) of IT development work now done in low-cost offshore centres.

One example of the benefits is the $43.4m annualised IT cost savings from migrating all the bank's global credit card units onto the Whirl platform that it got through the 2003 acquisition of Household Finance.

Tips for first home buyers

House prices and interest rates seem to keep rising faster than it's possible to stash money away for a deposit.

But there are things you can do to get a roof over your head and meet the repayments.

Work out a budget

Discipline and research are the keys to saving a deposit and meeting mortgage repayments according to HLB Mann Judd partner Matthew Gardiner.

Without savings discipline, first homebuyers will find it difficult to buy a home or to take advantage of the new Federal Government's proposed First Home Saver Account.

The scheme, to help young people get into the property market, is based on a very simple idea - save and don't spend. The home saver account plan would allow first home buyers to commit additional savings into a first home ``superannuation-style'' saving account that can be accessed after four years to help towards a deposit on a first home.

Top Blogs Hit All the Right Links

Your commitment to research, write and stay on top of the news on a given topic will be the greatest challenge. Your reward could be placing above the fold on a Google search. While it takes time to build a cache of relevant posts, blog placement can be achieved through relevant content, and inbound and outbound links to other sites.

Blog reputation, reach and value are derived from linking in and linking out to other sources that are relevant to your topic -- whether they are mainstream press, nonprofit public interest sites, or other law blogs, even those of your competitors. As Kevin O'Keefe, President of LexBlog said, "Imagine a legal conference or seminar where lawyers never referred to what another said. Imagine a legal article not referencing previous writings by other lawyers.

Comments On This Story

If their not ignoring him, their scaring the bajesus out of their viewers with all kinds of crazy lies. I beg of you, if you read all of these comments and you heard the idots putting him down, and claiming to udnerstand his plans as "No government" "big business only" than please, jsut read his plans, read his writings, check his history. He's not a white supremecists, not a racist, does not want the entire government gone, or any of the other things that the brainwashed masses are told to believe. It is SO easy jsut to researcht he man for yourself and not take someone else word for it. I do agree with some of the psoters, however, he probably won't win. Americans just don;t care anymore. Either they can;t read, or refuse to, or jsut think the tv is correct. They call names, blame the man for plans that were never his, don;t check it out, and go on in their TV induced world.

Oh YES! Doh, you are so right!Re-thinking economic orthodoxy is THE key.I suspect that the rise by the RBA is their attempt to prove to the new Government that they, not the government, are in control - a THREAT if you will.

I am not sure that Mr Turnbull and his party member has any idea how you can live on small income. Secondly the governments have to find way to support(rent assist) future houseless pensioners after the % of house ownership is going down. I do question the weight of house pricing in the CPI(lower than should be).

Home destroyed in Elbow Lake fire

They have lost everything and all you people can do is trash Jeff. True his personality leaves something to be desired, but think of the other people that were in that house at the time of the fire. Thank God that it happened during the day and not at night because they would have been dead. Jeff has a lot of enemies and very few friends. If you know him personally, then you know what I am saying. I heard a rumor that the Salvation Army wouldn't help the woman with clothing, shelter, etc. because of who she is related to. That is pathetic. If even the Salvation Army won't help in her time of need why are they even in Fergus Falls? They were there for the fire and police, but they won't help with the basic needs of this woman during this tragic time. Isn't that what the Salvation Army is for? She had to go to Alexandria for help from the Red Cross.

Open Mike: Models? Strip poker? Sign me up

Voters and computers aren't equipped to deal with reality, just numbers, and if they can eliminate a team because it lost a game — even one the refs lost for it — they're happy as clams.

Oregon shouldn't be penalized, but treated as if it's record is what it is — undefeated, if not unblemished. By the end of the season, it will all sort itself out anyway.

But Boren should keep his nose — and his opinions — out of it. University presidents should oversee their athletic programs to guard against abuses. They shouldn't get involved in the games themselves. It only serves to display their ignorance of the way things work on the playing field.

Boren also asked that Pac-10 officials not work future Oklahoma games, which isn't a bad idea, but it is one that should be presented by the athletic director.

Radio & TV Talk

Dallas McCade survives, though she might end up at Kicks.

I spoke too soon about it being a quiet day. (See my previous blog entry.)

Instead, we've got what is already being dubbed the Leap Day Massaacre.

Management at Eagles and Kicks Friday dumped nearly the entire on-air staff in what appears to be a severe cost-cutting measure.

The only major survivors: Cadillac Jack, Dallas McCade and Bill Celler. I hear traffic guy Greg Talmadge will remain, too.

Gone? Veteran Kicks news man Jim Vann, Eagle morning man Rhubarb Jones, Kicks morning co-host Kristen Gates, Kicks afternoon DJ Wylie Rose, Eagle afternoon jock Steve Mitchell and Eagle mid-day gal Sandy Weaver, Kicks night-time jock Scotty O'Brien, and promotions guru Buck in the Truck, to name a few.

Teddy Bear Case Exposes Failure of American Feminist Leaders

It took a teddy bear . . .

British schoolteacher Gillian Gibbons, an unimposing woman of 54, was found guilty of "inciting religious hatred" and sentenced to 15 days in jail and deportation by a court in Sudan's Khartoum after allowing her 7-year-old students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad."

In the meantime, Islamist fundamentalists have called for her execution, and her safety is in constant jeopardy. Demonstrations have increased, with crowds carrying machetes, shouting in part: "Execute her! Kill her, kill her by firing squad."

She is under such threat, Sudanese authorities have moved her to a secret location to ensure her safety.

Apparently, naming a cuddly bear Muhammad insults the prophet, while mass-murdering homicide bombers named Muhammad don't.

Chehalis man accused of lying to get flood aid

CHEHALIS, Wash. - A Chehalis man accused of lying to flood relief workers has been arrested and jailed, accused of pretending to be a flood victim and accepting relief aid. The Lewis County Sheriff's Office says 42-year-old Ted Cherry was arrested Thursday after his stories were questioned by United Way workers. Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield said Cherry admitted to having lied to the workers.Cherry had walked into the United Way Relief Center, caked in mud and crying, claiming his 20-acre farm had been destroyed in the storm. Cherry said he lost everything, including his animals and an antique grand piano, and said he was contemplating suicide. That's when no less than five volunteers stopped in their tracks to help. United Way gave the man clothing and cash cards for groceries and gas.
